THE HISTORY OF ENGINEERING
Where did engineering as a concept begin ?
Engineering is typically defined as “the branch of science and technology concerned with
the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures”. For as long as humans can
remember we have been exploiting mechanical principles to create useful tools that were in demand. The branches of engineering date back to ancient times, as humans have always found interesting ways to make tasks easier. Inventors you may call it, as the wheel, lever, and pulley are all examples of ancient inventions by so called “engineers”.
What about the term engineering?
The modern term “engineer” is derived from the latin words ingeniare, which means “to
devise" and ingenium which means "cleverness". The term dates back to 1325 which basically meant, “someone who works on engines”. Although we did not have automotive engines at that time period, the term was used for workers who created war machines. In fact, before that the term “engine” was basically a word for a clever or useful invention. As the term became more well known engineers became more prominent all across the world.
How did specific branches of engineering get introduced ?
Useful creations gave birth to specified types of engineering. The inventions of Thomas
Savery and the Scottish engineer James Watt ( the steam engine ) gave rise to modern Mechanical Engineering. The creation of the electric motor, and the experiments of Alessandro Volta gave birth to the modern form of electrical engineering. the first search engine was built by computer engineer Alan Emtage which helped develop computer engineering. All the different types of engineering were developed by specific creations that revolutionized the world we know today.
When did engineering start to revolutionize the world?
During the industrial revolution engineers all over the world were making themselves known. The steam engine, the telephone, the airplane, and electricity were all creations that drastically affected the engineering field in extremely positive ways. Not only was there an abundance of engineers and inventors in this time period, but there were also new branches of engineering popping up left and right. For example, mechanical and electrical are both types of engineering that were developed around this time period.
